About Rhonda & the origin of Shady Birch Counseling

Who am I?

Here are some adjectives people use to describe me: caring, fun-loving, quirky, accepting, easy-to-talk-to, open-minded, compassionate, adventurous, warm, engaging, pleasant, tender-hearted, curious, empathetic.

Rhonda S. Smith earned her Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Texas Tech University Health Science Center in 2022. She attended Western Governor’s University where she completed her Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing Management in 2019. Rhonda S. Smith is fully credentialed as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) with the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC).

Rhonda began her career providing mental health counseling to the under-served community including adolescents in residential detention centers. She specialized in teens and adults affected by anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma, attachment wounds, and symptoms resulting from difficult life experiences.

Rhonda’s approach to counseling focuses on providing unconditional positive regard, building trust, and creating a safe place for clients to explore the issues that trouble them. Using EMDR, Ego State Therapy, and other modalities Rhonda collaborates with clients to make meaningful and lasting changes.

Rhonda was born in South Dakota; however, has lived in many states throughout the U.S. She has made her forever home here in beautiful north Texas. As a young adult, Rhonda worked as a cytogenetic technologist, analyzing chromosomes for prenatal and cancer diagnosis. She and her husband have raised two children to adulthood and have adopted too many dogs and cats. The current pet count is three dogs, two cats, one bunny, and a multitude of fish. Throughout the years, Rhonda has gained valuable life experience and wisdom, which is an effective resource for connecting and empathizing with her clients.

In her free time, Rhonda enjoys concerts, hiking, going to the lake or beach, reading, arts & crafts, and playing with the dogs.

Shady Birch; the origin

Shady Birch Counseling was born from a belief that growth can happen even in the toughest seasons. The birch tree, with its silvery bark and ability to thrive in harsh climates, has always inspired me. It sheds what no longer serves it, bends without breaking, and reaches for the light—reminding me that resilience isn’t about staying unchanged, but about growing through the hard times.

The name Shady Birch carries pieces of my history and heart. It begins with my great-grandmother, Karolina Bertsch, whose authenticity, boldness, and moxie inspired me to be myself, take risks, and speak my truth. Her name feels like a touchstone, reminding me to stay grounded and explore my authentic self.

The “Shady” is a tribute to all the dogs I have loved, especially my current dog, Shady, who reminds me daily to slow down, enjoy the moment, and notice the simple joys around me.

Together, these influences remind me that growth is not about rushing forward, but about staying rooted, being fully present, and allowing yourself to change naturally, season by season. Shady Birch Counseling is the space I created to offer others that same opportunity—to find their footing, breathe, and rediscover their own rhythm for growth.
